Synopsis: Universes presented 'Live from the Edge' as a part of the 7th Encuentro of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, held in August of 2009 in Bogotá, Colombia, under the title 'Staging Citizenship: Cultural Rights in the Americas.' This 10-day event brought together activism, scholarship, and art around the themes of legacies, memories, struggles, and frontiers of citizenship. 'Live from the Edge' was an evening that showcased the ensemble’s special brand of fusion theater in a 'best of' event that tracks the evolution of their poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals to poetry and theater, hip-hop and gospel. Redefining what theater is and who it speaks to, 'Live from the Edge' was a unique performance event that turned the poem into a communal act. Universes is a poetic theater ensemble of multi-disciplined writers and performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz, hip-hop, politics, down home blues and Latin American boleros, to create moving, challenging and entertaining theatrical works. Its members include Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz, Gamal Abdel Chasten and William Ruiz (a.k.a., Ninja).
